Communications Officer 

The United Conservative Caucus consists of 47 Members of the Legislative Assembly  (MLAs) who support and promote the work of government in constituencies across Alberta.  As a pipeline of talent for Ministers’ Offices, Caucus serves as a vital training ground for  individuals pursuing a career in politics. 

As a Communications Officer for the United Conservative Caucus, you will play a key role  in developing and executing communication strategies that elevate MLA voices, highlight  constituency work, and connect with Albertans. You will support MLAs with written  materials, media engagement, and local communication efforts while collaborating with  internal teams to ensure cohesive messaging across platforms. 

You will contribute to the development of annual strategic plans, identify local  communication opportunities, and assist in managing media relations. Your success in this  role will require excellent writing skills, political instinct, and the ability to respond quickly  to emerging issues.

Experience: 

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills. 
  • Experience working or volunteering in a political environment, such as a campaign. Post-secondary education in communications or media is an asset. Experience supporting or managing media and public-facing materials. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Communications Strategy and Content:

o Compile daily media and issues scans. 

o Support all MLAs with written communication products including speeches,  video scripts, newspaper columns, etc. 

o Support the development of an annual caucus communications strategy.  o Develop strategies for communicating with target audiences in  

constituencies/regions.  

o Develop strategies to increase social media engagement and collaborate  with the Digital Communications team on products.  

o Assist in the development of content for newsletters, in coordination with the  Digital Communications team. 

  • Local and Constituency Support: 

o Individually and in collaboration with Constituency Office Staff and the  caucus Constituency Office Liaison, identify opportunities for MLAs in their  constituencies, including but not limited to: 

o Government announcements that directly impact a constituency (in  coordination with the appropriate Minister’s Office), which could include a  local news release, local media interview, or local podium announcement. o Highlighting community-led initiatives. 

o Identifying speaking or video opportunities. 

  • Media Relations and Risk Management: 

o Support communications management in responding to media requests. o Identify communications issues and risks, as appropriate.  

o Communicate with and, as appropriate, build relationships with local media  and members of the Alberta Press Gallery

Salary information: 

  • Annual salary starts at $62,000 depending on relevant experience Benefits, including pension plan
